Boxing was the most famous sport until the the other sport came out boxing was invented On 6 January 1681, the first recorded boxing match took place in Britain when Christopher Monck, 2nd Duke of Albemarle (and later Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica) engineered a bout between his butler and his butcher with the latter winning the prize. Early fighting had no written rules.

  1. Hi Alex,

Thanks for posting such an interesting blog about boxing. I didn't realise that the first recorded boxing match (in the modern day) occurred in 1681. It certainly is a sport with a long history!

If you would like to learn more about boxing or other sports that are currently part of the Olympic competition, please continue with the Winter Learning Journey. There is lots of information about the Olympic events and athletes in Day 3 and day 4 of the programme.

Hope to see you online often over the holidays :)

    Cheers, Rachel
